The Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) aims to mobilise over 600 trillion VND (27.9 billion USD) from both domestic and international sources to develop power plants and grids from 2016-2020, the Ministry of Industry and Trade said on August 6.

The group will negotiate with domestic banks and international financial organisations for loans to carry out its investment plans.

In the next five years, the EVN aims to build and put 11 power projects with 19 turbines into operation with total capacity of 5,819 megawatts. The group will also ensure progress on key and urgent projects, including the Lai Chau hydropower plant and projects under the Vinh Tan, Duyen Hai and O Mon power centres, while continuing with preparations to launch the first nuclear power plant in Ninh Thuan.

Part of the investment amount will be used for projects to supply electricity to rural, mountainous and island areas from 2013-2020, to meet the goal of providing access to electricity for all rural households.

From 2011 to 2015, the EVN spent nearly 480 trillion VND (22.3 billion USD) to develop power plants and grids, 2.37 times the amount spent from 2006 to 2010.-VNA
