The UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has pledged to assist Yen Bai and others northern mountainous provinces in raising public awareness of rabies.
The commitment was made at a working session between representatives from FAO and provincial relevant authorities in Yen Bai on May 8.
At the meeting, the province briefed the FAO delegation on work to prevent rabies in animals in recent years.
Valuing Yen Bai’s efforts in preventing rabies, the FAO delegation shared the world’s experience in dealing with the disease.
They suggested the province strictly carry out vaccinations on dogs and cats and raise awareness among residents on the disease by various ways.
During the visit to Yen Bai province, the FAO delegation made a field trip to Yen Binh district, where saw a high number of infections and fatalities.
Rabies has killed 76 people in the province since 2006. Only in the first months of this year, five deaths of the disease were reported in Yen Bai.
Rabies is a disease that is caused by a virus. The disease infects domestic and wild animals, and is spread to people through close contact with infected saliva via bites or scratches.-VNA
