It was heard at a conference in Hanoi on December 25 to review how the Resolution on agriculture, farmers and rural areas adopted at the seventh meeting of the Party Central Committee (10th tenure) has worked out over the past five years.
Taking centre stage at the event, National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung called for more attention to cultivation by fully exploiting technological advances.
Delegates were requested to review the construction of new style rural areas and poverty reduction, especially the mastery role of farmers in the campaign.
He also asked for clearer roles of the State management bodies, the Vietnam Fatherland Front and social organisations involved during the process.
Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Duc Phat reported that between 2009 and 2013, the agro-forestry-fisheries sector posted an annual growth rate of 2.9 percent. Exports soared 15.2 percent on average, hitting around 27.5 billion USD in 2013.
On the building of new-style rural areas, the yearly rate of poor households fell 2 percent with locals earning nearly 20 million VND (950 USD) in annual income each, more than doubling the 2008’s figure. The model of large-scale paddy field covering nearly 100,000 hectares is underway in 43 provinces nationwide.
