A government official has urged the Vietnam Fatherland Front to better its mass mobilisation work and create a broader consensus amongst society.

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung delivered the request at the 2nd working session of the 7th National Congress of the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) in Hanoi on Sept. 29. Head of the Party Central Committee’s Commission for Mass Mobilisation Ha Thi Khiet also attended the event.

The VFF and its member organisations should mobilise people from all walks of life, intellectuals, ethnic groups, religious followers and overseas Vietnamese to join hands with the entire Party, people and army to fulfill the Resolution of the 10th Party National Congress and the country’s socio-economic development programme set for the 2006-2010 period, he said.

The deputy PM also called on the VFF to encourage the people to take an active part in socio-economic development, hunger elimination, poverty reduction, maintaining political security and social order, and combating corruption, wastefulness and other negative phenomena.

He told the participants that in the years to come, the country will focus on branching out into new businesses and economic sectors in an effort to create more jobs and improve the quality of Vietnamese commodities for domestic consumption as well as for exports towards the goal of becoming an industrialised nation by 2020.

“This is a shared responsibility of the entire Party, people and political system, in which the VFF, its member organisations and the people themselves all play a vital role,” Hung stressed.

According to the official, the country still has more than 60 districts that are classified as poor, nearly 2,300 communes that are disadvantaged and over 500,000 families who are living in substandard housing.

The Party and State have already adopted a range of policies to deal with these issues, however, they are in need of support from all agencies and sectors, including the VFF and its members, Hung said.

The deputy PM expressed his hope that the VFF’s congress will contribute to the successful implementation of the country’s socio-economic tasks, national defence and security in the coming time.

Earlier, permanent member of the VFF Central Committee Nguyen Van Pha presented a report which summed up the opinions and suggestions made by the participants.

The delegates put forth various measures to enhance the VFF’s role as the country is entering a new era of development, including ways to renew the Party’s leadership in terms of the entire political system, and the VFF in particular.

They also emphasised the need to improve the VFF’s methods of operation and strengthen its organisational structure./.
