The President of the Philippines , Benigno S. Aquino, will make his first visit to Vietnam since he took office in June.
The visit, on October 26-27, is at the invitation of President Nguyen Minh Triet and is expected to further diplomatic and economic ties between the two countries.
After establishing diplomatic ties in 1976, Vietnam and the Philippines have spared no effort in boosting and strengthening their relationship by constantly exchanging visits and working closely at regional and global forums.
The two countries have seen a rise in two way trade turnover in recent years, recording 1.87 billion USD in the first eight months of this year.
Rice is Vietnam ’s major export to the Philippines with an average 1.5-1.7 million tonnes shipped each year.
Apart from rice, which makes up 60-70 percent of Vietnam ’s exports, agricultural products and electronic components are sold to the Philippines .
Vietnam imports mainly fertilisers, machinery, equipment and spare parts, minerals, liquefied gas, petrol, medicines and construction materials from the Philippines .
However, the Philippines ’s investment in Vietnam remains modest. It had 49 valid projects worth 274.78 million USD by August 2010.
Agriculture is a bright spot in bilateral cooperation as 60-70 percent of Vietnam ’s rice acreage is grown using varieties of Filipino or using techniques pioneered by the Philippines International Rice Research Institute (IRRI).
More than 100 IRRI scientists and researchers visit Vietnam every year and 60-70 Vietnamese scientists also travel to the Philippines each year for studying or working.
The two countries signed a fisheries cooperation agreement in June, which has enabled them to work closer together in this field.
They also have potential in education and training cooperation as there are rising numbers of Vietnamese graduates and post-graduates studying in the Philippines .
At present, 500 Vietnamese students are at Filipino universities or undergoing post-university education.
Vietnam and the Philippines have also signed numerous agreements to pave the way for closer cooperation on a wide range of subjects.
During the Filipino President’s visit, the two countries will sign several cooperation documents and exchange views on regional and international issues of mutual concern./.
