More than 153,000 EUR will be provided to central Quang Tri province to help it reduce the impacts of climate change on agriculture in sandy areas.
This was revealed at a ceremony announcing the next phase of a project to strengthen local capacities and reduce the effects of climate change, by the Finish Embassy in Vietnam , the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Centre for Rural Development in Central Vietnam , on July 31.
Funded by the Finish Embassy, the 153,778 EUR project will be carried out in two phases. The first phase, which took place from 2009 to 2011, focused on introducing new models of production and training courses to improve the awareness and capacity of local people to adapt to climate change.
The second phase will be carried out from July 2012 to June 2014 at Hai Que commune in Hai Lang district and Trieu Van and Trieu Quang communes in Trieu Phong district. The project will identify ways of developing agricultural production in sandy areas by studying other models of production that have adapted to climate change positively.
The project will raise local people’s knowledge of new production and cultivation methods and choose the plants and livestock that are best suited to these conditions.
It will also help to draw up an effective strategy for agricultural production on sandy areas, increase local people’s incomes and minimise the impacts of climate change.-VNA
