The first ASEAN Defence Interaction Programme (ADIP) opened in Brunei on March 19, the Bruneian Ministry of Defence has said.
According to a press release posted on the ministry's website on March 20, the ADIP is aimed at strengthening regional unity and identity among ASEAN defence establishments through respect for diversity, equality and mutual understanding.
The basis of regional integration lies in the connectivity of its people, and the fundamental value of people-to-people interaction is an important driver in strengthening cooperation among the ASEAN member states, the Defence Ministry said.
The inaugural ADIP brought together more than 20 defence and military officers from the ASEAN nations.
The two-day programme includes a roundtable discussion on regional cooperation in defence and security.
The concept of ADIP was adopted by ASEAN Defence Ministers during their seventh meeting in Brunei in May 2013.-VNA
