The first trial flight linking the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho and Thailand ’s Bangkok is scheduled to take off on July 21, announced the Can Tho People’s Committee on July 6.

The launching of the air route is the outcome of cooperation between Can Tho authorities, Vietravel, the Thai Administrative of Tourism, and the Thai Vietjet Air.

The flights will take off every five days from Bangkok at 11:30 and land in Can Tho airport at 13:00, and depart from Can Tho at 13:30 the same day, using 180-seat Airbus A320.

Fair for a round trip is 2.699 million VND (about 124 USD) included tax and fees.

According to Le Van Tam, Chairman of the Can Tho People’s Committee, the opening of the air route, which shortens travel time between the two cities, is a great chance for Can Tho to promote its tourism to Thai tourists.

Can Tho airport, one of the two airports in the Mekong Delta region, handled over 225,000 passengers in the first six months of this year, a rise of 72 percent year on year, but lower than its designed capacity of 3 million passengers per year.

Currently, the airport is conducting regular flights to Hanoi , Da Nang , Phu Quoc, Da Lat and Con Dao, and to Taipei ( China ’s Taiwan ) during Lunar New Year holidays.

Tam also revealed that so far this year, Can Tho welcomed more than 106,000 visitors, including 6,600 foreign tourists, earning 970 billion VND.-VNA
