Five dead, 15 missing in floods in northern mountainous localities

At least five people were killed and 15 others went missing during downpours and floods in several northern mountainous provinces from August 1-3.

Hanoi (VNA) – At least five people were killed and 15 others went missing duringdownpours and floods in several northern mountainous provinces from August 1-3.

The victims arefrom Bac Kan, Lai Chau, Dien Bien, Yen Bai and Son La provinces, the CentralSteering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control reported onAugust 3.

Torrential rainsalso damaged 87 houses, submerged 5 hectares of farming land, swept away 61heads of cattle and poultry, and triggered landslides on national andprovincial roads in the localities.

Local authoritiesvisited families of the victims and mobilised forces to help residents in theflood-hit areas overcome consequences caused by the natural disasters andstabilise their lives.  

The CentralSteering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control on August 2asked provincial steering boardsfor naturaldisaster prevention, search and rescue to keep a closewatch on the development of downpours and floods and update all-levelauthorities and people on the situation to take timely response measures.

The provincial steering boards and hydroelectricitycompanies of Son La, Hoa Binh and Tuyen Quang were also requested to ensuresafety of reservoirs.-VNA
