Furture of electric vehicle development in Vietnam discussed

Electric vehicles have high development potential in Vietnam amid the growing trend of using green and clean energy, heard an online conference held by Green Innovation and Development Centre (GreenID) and the Giao thong (Transport) newspaper on December 21.

Hanoi (VNA) – Electric vehicles have high development potential in Vietnam amid the growing trend of using green and clean energy, heard an online conference held by Green Innovation and Development Centre (GreenID) and the Giao thong (Transport) newspaper on December 21.

Participants discussed a wide range of issues related to the future development of electric vehicles in the country, focusing on infrastructure system, encouragement policy, charging centre planning, and experience from countries in the world.

Nguyen Thi Hong Nga, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Giao thong Newspaper said that Vietnam’s Automobile Industry Development Strategy until 2025 with a vision to 2035 clarified that Vietnam encourages the development of environmentally friendly vehicles that meet requirements in emission standards in line with the roadmap approved by the Prime Minister.

Meanwhile, Dr. Nguyen Quoc Khanh, an energy specialist from the GreenID and a member of a research team of a project in forecasting the development of electric vehicles in Vietnam, said that the team has devised three scenarios with three development levels for Vietnam in the field, using Calculator 2050, a tool supporting countries in exploring low-carbon path.

Dao Cong Quyet, a representative from the Vietnam Association of Automobile Manufacturers (VAMA) cited the Vietnam Register’s data showing that the number of electric vehicles in Vietnam remains modest at 140 in 2019, 900 in 2020, and additional 600 units as of the first quarter of 2021.

Quyet suggested that Vietnam should issue a roadmap to boost the growth of electric vehicles with specific periods and requirements, along with policies to encourage manufacturers and consumers to switch to the vehicles, paving the way for the expansion of the electric vehicle market.

He also proposed the building of regulations on treatment of waste products related to electric vehicles such as expired batteries, cars and motorbikes./.

Emission standards for motorcycles to be issued in July

Under the draft, motorcycles produced before 2008 will be subject to the lowest level of inspection standards, level 1, while those manufactured from 2008 onwards will be assessed to a higher standard. Similar rules will also apply to motorised vehicles, with level 1 for those manufactured before 2016.

Vietnam consults stakeholders on climate change scenarios

The 2025 scenarios build on Vietnam’s 2020 projections, incorporating the latest findings from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s sixth assessment report and insights from domestic and global partners. The focus is on extreme weather events, particularly in urban areas, and rising sea levels, which threaten Vietnam’s low-lying coastal regions. Lang Son becomes Vietnam’s 4th global geopark

Lang Son Global Geopark spans over 4,842 square kilometres, roughly 58% of the province, and is home to around 627,500 people. It features a rich blend of geological wonders and cultural heritage, including stunning caves and sinkholes such as Nguom Mooc Cave, Tham Lum and Ung Roac. Its biodiversity is also protected within the Huu Lien Nature Reserve.
