Gender equality and resettlement discussed

Integrating gender equality into resettlement plans will increase women’s participation in the decision-making process, heard an int'l workshop in the northern province of Quang Ninh on April 13.

Quang Ninh (VNA) – Integrating genderequality into resettlement plans will increase women’s participation in thedecision-making process, not only at the household level but also theinstitutional one, heard an international workshop in the northern province ofQuang Ninh on April 13.

The event was jointly held by the Ministry ofLabour, Invalids and Social Affairs, the World Bank (WB) and the UN Entity forGender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) in Vietnam.

Participants said the development of hydropower,transport and urban projects is one of the main reasons behind the resettlement.In that context, women are most susceptible and could face a high risk ofpoverty.

Shoko Ishikawa, Chief Representative of the UNWomen in Vietnam, said Vietnam’s legal system has progressed in ensuring genderequality.

However, the biggest shortcoming at present isthe rights of land use and access to financial resources and training opportunitiesare unequal between men and women, she noted.

Deputy Minister of Labour, Invalids and SocialAffairs Nguyen Trong Dam asked the WB and the UN Women to increase cooperationwith the ministry to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment in allfields, contributing to the socio-economic development in Vietnam.

More than 100 participating delegates introduceddifferent resettlement forms in the world and shared a lot of experience in designinggender-inclusive resettlement plans.

Education-training sector preparing for strategic turning point: Minister

Ho Chi Minh City steps up law enforcement on fishing vessel monitoring system

Ho Chi Minh City has 4,449 fishing vessels, of them 4,301 equipped with VMS devices, making up 96.67%. Between January 1, 2024, and December 31, 2025, authorities found 1,729 cases of vessels losing VMS connection for six hours or more, issuing fines in 196 cases totalling nearly 6.6 billion VND (about 252,000 USD)
