Hanoi (VNA)Polling stations across the Philippines opened at 6 AM on May 9 for millions of Filipinos to cast their votes selecting a new President and other congressional and local positions.

Voters will elect a new President among five candidates to replace current President Benigno Aquino, whose term is slated for ending this June.

The 71-year-old Mayor Rodrigo Duterte of southern Davao city has led in latest surveys, with his bold promise to wipe out crime and corruption.

Voters will also elect new Vice Presidents, 300 members to the new-term Parliament, and 18,000 local positions in the day.-VNA
