Vietnam’s Permanent Representative Mission to the United Nations placed funeral books in New York from October 11-13 for people to pay tribute to General Vo Nguyen Giap.
Leaders of the United Nations and its committees and agencies, ambassadors and diplomats in the UN subsequently expressed their deep condolences over the death of the legendary General.
The respect-paying ceremony was also joined by Vice Permanent President of the Communist Party of the US Jarvis Tyner, New York officials, foreign friends and overseas Vietnamese people in the country.
The Vietnamese Consulate General in San Francisco, California on October 12-13 welcomed local authorities, representatives of diplomatic corps, associations and overseas Vietnamese people who came to pay their respects.
From October 11-12, overseas Vietnamese people in Cuba also remembered the General’s life at the headquarters of the Vietnamese Embassy.
Second Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba’s Central Committee and Vice President of the Council of State and the Council of Ministers of Cuba Jose Ramon Machado, in his notes, said General Giap will live in the minds of Cuban people forever.
Leaders of the General Staff of the Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces, representatives of the Cuba-Vietnam Friendship Association and diplomatic corps, and Cuban people also paid tribute to the revered military leader.
The same day, a respect-paying ceremony was organised at the headquarters of the Vietnamese Embassy in Angola.
At a service in Mexico from October 10-11, President of the Mexico-Vietnam Friendship Parliamentary Group Alberto Anaya Gutierrez handed over a message of condolences from the Mexican Labour Party to Vietnamese Ambassador Le Thanh Tung.
The message said General Giap was a vivid example of sacrifice, courage and honesty who significantly contributed to changing the world.
“We always remember the good sentiments the General had towards the Mexican Labour Party and consider him a mentor in our revolutionary struggle,” the message said.
Vietnamese embassies in Chile and Egypt also held services in memory of the General.-VNA
