Hailstone, whirlwinds wreak havoc in northern provinces

Hailstones and whirlwinds struck northern provinces in the past few days, leaving one missing and three injured as well as causing initial damage of around 26 billion VND (1.12 million USD) as of 19:00 on February 18.

Hanoi (VNA) – Hailstones and whirlwinds struck northern provinces in thepast few days, leaving one missing and three injured as well as causing initialdamage of around 26 billion VND (1.12 million USD) as of 19:00 on February 18.

Accordingto the Office of the National Committee for Natural Disaster Response andSearch and Rescue, whirlwinds blew roofs off schools, hospitals and 571 housesin Thai Nguyen province. Power blackouts plunged many areas into darkness asstrong winds seriously destroyed local electric grid.

Inthe mountainous province of Ha Giang, 538 houses, five schools, and sixinfrastructure works were affected. The hail also devastated some 17.1 hectaresof crops, and killed more than 1,000 heads of poultry. Total damage wasestimated at nearly 6 billion VND (258,000 USD).

Oneman was reported missing in Tua Chua district, Dien Bien province, where heavyrains and whirlwinds demolished hundreds of houses and many otherinfrastructure works.

Meanwhile, heavy rains accompanied with galeforce winds left three peopleinjured in Ba Be district of Bac Kan province in addition to ripping roofs ofhundreds of local houses.

Hailstones and whirlwinds also caused critical damage in Yen Bai and TuyenQuang provinces.

Local authorities have worked to assist residents so that they can stabilisetheir lives and production soon.-VNA

Coast Guard Region 2 promotes IUU-free fishing among Quang Ngai fishermen

The Command of Coast Guard Region 2 briefed the fishermen on the Law of the Sea of Vietnam, the Fisheries Law, and legal documents related to IUU prevention. Officers also provided guidance on identifying areas under Vietnam’s sovereignty and jurisdiction, traditional fishing grounds, warning zones, and prohibited fishing areas.
