Hanoi (VNA) – Hailstorm hit many localities across the country during the past few days, causing damages to residents’ houses and food crops.
In the northern mountainous province of Lao Cai, a strong whirlwind accompanied by hail swept through six communes in Bac Ha district on April 24. Two houses collapsed in the rain, killing one resident, while more than 100 houses had their roofs blown away. Around 60 ha of maize and herbs were destroyed. Total damage was estimated at 2 billion USD (approximately 90,000 USD).
Provincial officials are directing efforts to overcome the consequences of the hailstorm in the district.
The northern mountainous province of Yen Bai was also hit by hail and strong rain on April 22 night and April 23 morning. Total physical losses were estimated at 5 billion VND (220,000 USD).
In the central region, hailstorms occurred in mountainous communes of Nghe An province during three days from April 21-23. Hailstone as big as 6-7cm in diameter damaged fibro house roofs as well as food crops.
In Quang Nam province, it hailed for two hours in Ch’om commune of Tay Giang district on April 23. The first-ever hailstorm came after two months of hot weather without rain.-VNA
