Hanoi (VNA) – The exhibition “Hell-Dunkel” (Light-Dark), featuring 54 black and white photos by German photographer Barbara Klemm, will take place at the Goethe Institut in Hanoi from October 17 to 29.

Co-organised by the Goethe Institut and the German Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations (ifa), the event will display selected works from the photographer in the former Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic, which document Germany’s path to reunification.

Barbara Klemm, considered the most important photographic chronicler of the old Federal Republic Germany, said at a press conference in Hanoi on October 16 that she was delighted with the invitation to hold the exhibition in Vietnam.

She said her career began in the 1970s, when a strong campaign spread around the world against the war in Vietnam.

She said she had followed German students on the streets to capture parts of the demonstrations.

Born in 1939, Barbara Klemm worked as a photojournalist for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) for over 40 years, overseeing many major political events. Today, her photos are regarded as icons of German 20th century history.

The photographer has worked exclusively with the analogue camera throughout her life. Her film is black and white and she even abstains from using flash. Klemm places her interest in people and focuses on social realities. –VNA
