Hanoi hospitals equipped to combat measles

The Ministry of Public Health will provide 12 medical ventilators for three hospitals in Hanoi in the face of measles outbreak that has claimed 25 lives so far, mostly in children aged below 10 years.

Four devices will each go to the National Hospital of Paediatrics, the Thanh Nhan and Dong Da hospitals, as part of the Prime Minister’s recent decision signed on April 17.

The ministry is requested to buy equipment and Gammaglobulin substance for Bach Mai hospital, the National Hospital of Paediatrics, and the National Hospital of Tropical Diseases, using a State funding of over 80 billion VND (3.8 million USD).

The nation has to date recorded over 7,000 cases of measles, one third of which is in the capital.

The epidemic erupted in 61 out of 63 cities and provinces in the first quarter of this year. The number of fatalities from measles complications has amounted to 108.

Vietnam is in the stage of curbing measles and expects to eliminate the disease by 2017.-VNA
