Hanoi launches first book street

Hanoi (VNA) – Hanoi’s first Book Street made itsdebut on May 1 at 19/12 Street of Hoan Kiem district, aiming to promotereading culture and develop a learning society for the country’s sustainable development.

Addressing the opening ceremony, Ngo Van Quy, Vice Chairmanof the Hanoi People’s Committee, said that after four months of construction, Hanoilaunched the first street for book introduction, which also serves as a spacefor readers to access diverse book sources and talk with domestic and foreignauthors.

He expressed hope that the space will become a culturalhighlight of the city, while meeting the reading demand of locals.

Meanwhile, Phan Tu Lan, head of the municipal Department ofInformation and Communications, said that the agency is working to set up amanagement board for the book street to better support its operation in aneffective way and deal with arising issues.

At the same time, the department will coordinate closelywith units located in the street to organise book introduction and copyrighttrading activities, he added.

The street has 16 booths with easy access for children andpeople with disabilities, along with public computers for readers to search forbook information, free wifi and water.

Following the opening ceremony, a number of events wereheld, including exchanges with a number of authors and book distributors.-VNA
