All preparations for the first ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting Plus (ADMM+) scheduled on Oct. 12-13 have been completed, said Vietnam’s Defence Minister, General Phung Quang Thanh.

The general made the remark at the ADMM Retreat in Hanoi on Oct. 11, during which ASEAN Defence Ministers and the ASEAN General Secretary reviewed preparations for the ADMM+.

He said that after the recent fourth ADMM hosted by Hanoi, the process of establishment of ADMM Plus showed the bloc’s high level of determination and unanimity on defence cooperation.

The success would not only boost ties among ASEAN countries but also expand cooperation with the bloc’s major partners, in order to maintain the region’s peace, stability and development, and contribute to the building of the ASEAN Political-Security Community, Thanh said.

Ministers heard the ASEAN General Secretary’s briefing on latest developments in ASEAN and the Vietnamese Deputy Defence Minister reporting results of the ASEAN Defence Senior Officials’ Meeting held in Ho Chi Minh City .

They exchanged opinions on regional security and re-checked the ADMM+ agenda, documents for discussion on the theme, “Potential, prospect and direction for practical cooperation within the framework of ADMM+”, and the Joint Statement of the first ADMM+.

At the meeting, the name of the host of the second ADMM+ and the handover of the ADMM+ Presidency -- from Vietnam to Indonesia -- were confirmed.

The first ADMM+ will convene Defence Ministers of ASEAN countries and eight major dialogue partners, including China , Japan , the Republic of Korea , India , New Zealand , Australia , Russia and the United States./.
