Hanoi is taking the lead in meeting the population’s healthcare needs, a conference to review the implementation of the 2011-2015 health programme heard in Hanoi on October 21.

The health sector has made remarkable progress in health care provision over the last five years, Deputy Director of the municipal Health Department Hoang Duc Hanh said.

He noted, however, that a rise in communicable and non-communicable diseases was posing a challenge to the sector, requiring a concerted effort to prevent the diseases from spreading.

To realise the city’s objective of providing health care for all residents by 2020, the Department devised plans to implement the national target programmes, maintain the results achieved so far, and provide effective preventive care.

In the near future, the city will carry out a number of measures, such as encouraging social organisations to engage in health care services and mobilising resources for health care improvements effectively, especially in disadvantaged areas.

In the last five years, Hanoi allocated 567 billion VND (26.6 million USD) to health care programmes, with a focus on maternal and child health, and communicable and non-communicable diseases, as well as improvements to the quality of local health care provision.

In the city, more than 51,000 middle-aged women were screened for cancer as part of a three-year project on cervical and breast cancer, which ends this year.

The project, led by the Hanoi Committee for the Advancement of Women, involved 180 communes and towns, as well as 20 businesses with a female-dominated workforce.

The city also distributed free medicine worth 500 million VND (24,000 USD) and equipped the Hanoi Oncology Hospital with machinery worth more than 1.5 billion VND (72,000 USD).-VNA
