Jakarta (VNA) – The aviation industry of Indonesia has sustained major losses due to haze arising from forest and land fires in several localities in the country.

Hundreds of flights have been delayed or cancelled, affecting thousands of passengers, Commercial Director of Citilink Indonesia Hans Nugroho said, adding that thick haze has forced his company to cancel flights for up to several days as visibility is reduced.

The airline’s losses are estimated at 25 billion rupiah (2 million USD), he revealed.

Manado Deddy Irawan, General Manager of Garuda Indonesia, also admitted that his airline had indeed suffered losses as it had to pay for the parking cost, hotels for crew and compensation for passengers.

Haze has seriously affected other carriers such as Lion Air and AirAsia and even forced 16 airports in Sumatra and Kalimantan islands to close at several times.-VNA
