HCM City pledges to implement Japanese ODA projects effectively

Ho Chi Minh City has committed to coordinating closely with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to effectively carry out projects using the Japanese Government’s ODA.

HCM City (VNA) – Ho Chi Minh City has committed to coordinating closelywith the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to effectively carry outprojects using the Japanese Government’s ODA.

The pledge was made by Chairman of themunicipal People’s Committee Nguyen Thanh Phong while receiving the new JICAChief Representative in Vietnam, Shimizu Akira, on June 3.

Phong told the guest that the city hasbasically controlled the spread of the COVID-19 in community and moved to the newnormal state, with the dual target of disease prevention and economic recoveryand development.

In this context, it defines that steppingup public investment disbursement is one of the important measures to supportits economic development and helps speed up the process of Japan’s ODAprojects.

The official acknowledged efforts by JICAand investors in speeding up the construction on these projects, includingMetro Line 1, amid the COVID-19 outbreaks.

He suggested Akira soon sign the final loanagreement for the project, encourage the contractors to focus their resourceson finishing it by year-end, and help speed up the construction on water, andwastewater projects.

Akira expressed his hope that Ho Chi MinhCity’s economic recovery policies and activities will soon take into effect,thus contributing to stabilising Vietnam’s economy.

He proposed the city’s leaders continuefacilitating the construction of on-going projects, resume the granting of visasfor Japanese experts and engineers, and support the import of equipment andmachines serving these projects.

In the time to come, JICA will work withthe locality in carrying out the urban railway projects and study thepossibility of cooperation in the environmental field and flooding prevention,he added./.

GDP expands 8.18%, with new growth drivers taking shape

According to the National Statistics Office under the Ministry of Finance, GDP expanded by 8.39% in the second quarter, up from 8.14% a year earlier. Growth for the first six months reached 8.18%, exceeding the 7.63% recorded in the same period of 2025. Economists at United Overseas Bank (UOB), a Singapore-based multinational bank, said Vietnam’s gross domestic product (GDP) expanded by 8.39% in the second quarter of 2026, from 7.94% in the first quarter.
