Hanoi (VNA) – The Independent and Daily Mail of the UK has described a Vietnamese delivery driver who saved a baby falling from a 13th-floor balcony as a “hero delivery driver.”

Nguyen Ngoc Manh heard desperate screams from neighbours alerting people below that the child had climbed over a balcony railing and was clinging on for her life.

Manh, 31, climbed onto the corrugated roof a small structure on the ground floor moments before the three-year-old girl lost her grip.

As she plummeted to the ground, Manh managed to grab her and pluck the baby to safety.

His good deed has made headlines of both domestic and foreign newspapers over the past days, and the video clip of the incident goes viral on Twitter, receiving commendations of Twitter users.

Both the Independent and Daily Mail have headlined “hero delivery driver” for articles featuring the man.

“Since the incident, Manh revealed he acted instinctively as he has a daughter of his own who is also two-years-old,” Daily Mail said.

“When the incident happened I did not think much,' Manh was cited by the newspaper as saying. 'Seeing the baby I immediately thought of my daughter at home and hurriedly tried to save her.”

Daily Mail also cited a Twitter account with a video footage showing the heart-stopping moment.

Manh's life has 'turned upside down' since saving the toddler from death and he has received thousands of positive messages on social media.

'[My life] has not just changed - my life has turned upside down. Normally my Facebook posts draw only a few dozen responses, now I get tens of thousands,' he said.

The toddler was taken to the nearby National Children's Hospital and was treated for a dislocated hip. Meanwhile, Manh, who has been hailed a hero by locals, suffered a slight sprain in his arm.

Manh is humble about his brave act and said: 'I don't see myself as a hero. I just want to do good,” according to Daily Mail.

He can be seen on security cameras rushing to climb on to the roof of the lean-to structure directly below.

He can then be seen grabbing the child as she hurtles towards him.

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc sent a letter praising Manh for his bravery.

"I'm moved to know on February 28, 2021, Nguyen Ngoc Manh was so brave and acted so quickly to save a baby that fell from the 13th floor of block 60B at the Nguyen Huy Tuong apartment complex in Thanh Xuan Trung ward, Thanh Xuan district, Hanoi," he wrote.

"I praise Nguyen Ngoc Manh for his courageous action and high sense of responsibility.

"I ask the Hanoi People's Committee and the Central Committee of Emulation and Commendation to recognise Nguyen Ngoc Manh's shining example of a noble gesture, kindness and compassion so we will have more people like him in society."

The chairman of the Hanoi’s People’s Committee praised Manh for his bravery. He also said Manh will receive a certificate and a cash reward for his action.

Residents also praised his action on social media.

One said: “Inspirational! Well done Manh.”

The second said: “Big salute to Real Hero Manh!”

The third one said: “So typical of Vietnamese people, always helping each other! Well done mate, you’re a champion!”
