High school career-guidance programmes offer students practical advice

High schools in Ho Chi Minh City are offering more career guidance programmes to foster students’ awareness about career choices and study plans.

HCM City (VNS/VNA) - High schools in Ho Chi Minh City are offering more careerguidance programmes to foster students’ awareness about career choices andstudy plans. 

BuiThi Xuan High School in the city’s district 1, for instance, earlier this monthcarried out a programme with businesses and career counselling specialists whoshared information about the labour market. 

NguyenDuy Tam, deputy rector of the school, said the programme aimed to providestudents with advice on choosing the career they desire. 

InMarch, Nguyen Du High School in district 10 carried out a programme themed“Experience One Day as a Teacher” to help students understand the work andactivities that teachers perform in a classroom setting.

Theevent attracted 197 students from all grades at the school.

HuynhThanh Phu, rector of the school, said that students can learn about theircore strengths and weaknesses in particular work environments. Manystudents became more confident about pursuing tertiary study at universities ofeducation.

AAu Vocational Guidance School in HCM City offers the AAu Experience thatincludes on-site visits to school facilities and participation in demonstrationclasses as well as Q&A sessions with the school’s lecturers to givestudents and parents an insight into prospective careers.

Theprogramme has over the past years met the demand for career orientation atsecondary schools, high schools, tertiary establishments, and social supportestablishments.

Arepresentative at the A Au Vocational Guidance School said that updatedinformation on the labour market should be part of career orientationprogrammes.

Amidthe COVID-19 pandemic, many apps and software on career orientation have beenlaunched. 

LeThi Thanh Mai, head of the enrolment department at Vietnam NationalUniversity-HCM City, said that online channels offer useful informationon career counselling and guidance for students andparents. 

Careereducation is expected to be part of the educational curriculum atall secondary and high schools by 2025 as part of the Government-approvedproject on career education for high school students for the 2018-2025 period./.

Ho Chi Minh City addresses manpower shortage for urban railway development

Under the human resources training scheme serving the development of the urban railway network approved by the municipal People’s Committee, the city will need around 70,000 workers by 2030 to support investment in and development of its metro system, including project management personnel, operations and maintenance staff, engineers, technical workers, consultants and designers.

Ministry proposes seven-day 2027 Lunar New Year holiday

Under the Ministry of Home Affairs' proposal, civil servants and public employees in Vietnam would receive five statutory days off, including two days before and three days after the Lunar New Year.
