Hanoi (VNS/VNA) - Vietnam’s High Command of Navy has held a ceremony to celebrate the recognition of HQ 671 military transport vessel as a national treasure in the northern port city of Hai Phong.

The vessel contributed to the Ho Chi Minh Sea Trail, across which many ships transported food, weapons and medicines to supply the southern front during the resistance war against the US, as well as fights protecting Vietnam’s sovereignty over the Spratly Islands. It is currently preserved at the Naval Museum in Hai Phong city.

Particularly, naval soldiers of HQ 671 vessel organised 20 voyages, transporting nearly 400 tonnes of weapons and goods to the harbours of many southern provinces including Quang Ngai, Phu Yen, Ba Ria-Vung Tau, Bac Lieu and Ca Mau, in addition to transporting revolutionary cadres to the southern battlefields.

In the Tet Offensive of 1975, HQ 671 transported weapons and soldiers to fight on the Spratly Islands. The vessel has been conferred with the title of Heroic People’s Armed Forces twice by the Party and the State.

Addressing at the ceremony, Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee  Nguyen Thien Nhan expressed his admiration and gratitude to the naval soldiers of HQ 671 vessel who bravely achieved significant accomplishments during the war against the US.

Such heroic examples would be a precious lesson for both Vietnamese soldiers and people to follow and would be honoured and respected for generations, he added.-VNS/VNA
