ILO Vietnam willing to help Vietnamese gov’t, employers, workers

HCM City (VNA) – Country Director of the InternationalLabour Organisation (ILO) Vietnam Chang-Hee Lee has said that ILO Vietnam wasready to help the Vietnamese Government, employers and employees to findsuitable jobs as the coronavirus takes its toll on the health and labour marketsand the economy.

Lee hailed Vietnam for its efforts to control the COVID-19pandemic, reflected via the Prime Minister’s message of accepting economic lossesto protect people’s lives.

As the fight against the epidemic continues, it is necessary totake immediate action to mitigate its negative impacts on businesses,employment and workers’ incomes, he said.

According to the ILO, the crisis will cut the total workinghours by 6.7 percent worldwide in the second quarter of this year, equivalentto the loss of 195 million full-time jobs. The hardest-hit regions includeArabian countries (8.1 percent of working hours, or 5 million full-time jobs),Europe (7.8 percent, or 12 million full-time jobs) and Asia-Pacific (7.2percent, 125 million full-time jobs).

The ILO forecast there will be huge losses across all incomegroups, especially in upper-middle income countries, including those in Southeast Asia. 

An estimated 81 percent of the global workforce, or 3.3billion people, are being hurt by partial or full-closure of their workplaces. Themost-affected sectors include lodging and dining services, manufacturing,retail, trade and administrative services.

ILO General Director Guy Ryder said workersand businesses are facing a catastrophe in both developed and developingeconomies.

The ILO has called on countries to take urgent measures on alarge scale in four pillars, namely supporting businesses, employment andincome; stimulating the economy and employment; protecting workers; and usingsocial dialogue between governments, workers and employers to seek solutions.

It suggested expanding social welfare, supporting jobretainment, tax reductions and fiscal support for micro, small and medium-sizedenterprises, along with several sectors./.

Coast Guard Region 3 intensifies patrols to combat IUU fishing

Vietnam Red Cross launches emergency aid for storm-hit provinces

The Vietnam Red Cross Society has decided to allocate over 3.3 billion VND (125,472 USD) in cash and goods to assist Dak Lak, Gia Lai, and Quang Ngai provinces, with the funding from its H2025 relief account at Vietcombank and from the “Clean Water for Communities” project, sponsored by Procter & Gamble (P&G) through Americares.

Vietnamese, Chinese border guards coordinate to promote legal awareness among residents

During the four-day programme, thousands of leaflets were distributed, covering topics such as border management agreements and protocols, the agreement on regulations for management of the Vietnam–China land border, immigration and customs laws, border gate management, and measures to combat smuggling and trade fraud, as well as the importance of safeguarding national sovereignty and border security.

Breeding cows presented to poor households along Vietnam–Cambodia border
