Jakarta (VNA) – Indonesia’s Industry Ministry said it has so far distributed subsidies for the purchase of 30,083 electric motorcycles, accounting for 60.1% of the target of 50,000 for the 2024 budget year.

The ministry's spokesperson Febri Hendri Antoni Arif said on May 28 that the progress of the distribution of assistance for the purchase has so far surpassed the total in 2023.

According to him, the ministry is aiming to achieve the 2024 target by August or early September. Therefore, from the start, it has proposed that the subsidies for electric motorcycle purchases be given to all Indonesian citizens from various economic backgrounds.

The step is aimed at changing people's perception and behaviour regarding the use of e-motorcycles, he added. He informed that under the subsidy programme, people can get a discount of 7 million IDR (around 435.36 USD) on the purchase of an electric motorcycle.

As of mid-May, the total number of electric vehicles in Indonesia, comprising two- and three-wheeled vehicles, passenger and commercial vehicles, and buses, had reached 144,547 units.

Earlier, Secretary General of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Dadan Kusdiana said the government has readied funding of 455 million USD to provide subsidies for the purchase of electric motorcycles. The subsidies will cover the sale of 800,000 new electric motorcycles and the conversion of 200,000 combustion motorcycles./.
