Jakarta (VNA) – The Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) has focused on reinforcing security checks in its waters following an array of recent terror attacks in the country.
Through their investigations, the country’s authorised agencies have found terrorist groups have used sea lanes to transport and distribute weapons and explosives to members of their networks.
The TNI AL has, therefore, raised its vigilance and prepared all resources to detect any potential terror activity.
Local authorities were asked to pay special attention to maritime security as Riau Islands and Batam were categorized as “susceptible” to terror threats due to their location in the Malacca Strait, a busy international route.
The police reported that since 2000, 342 terror attacks, big and small, occurred in the country, with 1,500 suspects arrested.
These attacks killed 48 people and injured 108 others and Jakarta has been intensifying anti-terrorism effort.
The Government and parliament are pushing the adoption of a new anti-terrorism bill so it can be promulgated in June. -VNA
