Jakarta (VNA) – Indonesia is determined to increase its coffeeoutput to reclaim the position as the world’s second biggest producer.

The determinationwas conveyed by Minister of Research and Technology Bambang Brodjonegoro whenattending a webinar themed “Indonesia on the World Coffee Map: Opportunitiesand Prospects” on September 5.

He said thatcurrently Indonesia’s coffee plantation land area is 1.3 million hectares whichcan produce 600,000 tonnes of coffee per year.

Irfan Anwar,Chairman of the Indonesian Coffee Exporters and Industry Association (AEKI),said that increasing coffee productivity needs to be the government's attentionconsidering that the area of Indonesian coffee plantations is still largerthan Vietnam. If Indonesia has an area of 1.3 million hectares, Vietnam onlyhas 650,000 hectares.

At present, Vietnamis the world’s second largest coffee producer after Brazil. It is followed byColumbia and Indonesia./.
