Jakarta (VNA) – Indonesia has outlined an ambitious target to achieve a milestone in the power sector with its electrification ratio of 100 percent by 2020.
According to Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Ignasius Jonan, the electrification ratio reached 98.9 percent by August, and with a monthly increase of around 0.1 percent, the target of 100 percent can be achieved by 2020.
The minister pointed to the fact that some 500,000 households applied for new power connections annually.
The Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry’s data showed that over the past eight years, electrification ratio has increased from 67.2 percent to 98.05 percent, with electricity still generated mainly from fossil energy.
Last year, power supply in the country reached 62,600 MW, and electricity consumption was recorded at more than 1,000 kWh per person.
Two months ago, the government decided to invest some 6.5 trillion IDR (nearly 464.3 billion USD) in the state-owned power utility Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) to improve its management capacity.
The nation is also working to develop renewable energy while providing electricity and fuel oil for local residents at reasonable prices./.
