Jakarta (VNA) – Thousands of Muslim worshipers gathered at the National Monument (Monas) Square on February 21 to seek the mercy of almighty Allah for Indonesia ahead of this year’s general election.

With those from Jakarta and other cities taking apart, the event was organised by the Indonesian Ulema Council’s (MUI) Jakarta chapter, along with several other Islamic organisations, under the theme of “212 Evening of Prayer”.

The event saw the presence of Amien Rais, one of the Reform Movement leaders; legislators Fahri Hamzah and Fadli Zon; Speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly Zulkifli Hasan; and daughter of Indonesia’s former President Soeharto, Titiek Soeharto.

The crowd started the event’s agenda by performing compulsory Maghrib (sunset prayers), followed by Isha (evening prayers) in congregation, as well as chanting praises to Allah.

Zulkifli Hasan underlined the importance of conducting fair, peaceful, and democratic parliamentary and presidential elections for a better future in Indonesia.

To secure the gathering, over 12,000 security personnel were deployed, including those from the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Indonesian Military, and the Jakarta municipal authorities. –VNA
