The Indonesian Government is planning to step up its commitment to renewable energy technology, an area of high potential in the country, and cooperate in this field with fellow members of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum.
Director of the Indonesian Agency for Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT) Marzan A Iskandar said geo-thermal energy will help feed Indonesian development in the next 30 years.
He added that the government is working hard to ensure that renewable energy soon accounts for 17 percent of the country’s total energy, a rise from the current level of 5 percent.
Located in the Pacific Ocean with over 17,000 islands, Indonesia boasts abundant renewable energy resources, especially geo-thermal energy. Reserves of this source could potentially generate 29,000MW in power for the nation. At present, a mere 1,343MW is exploited.
Iskandar stated that the nation’s energy goals are achievable, providing the country has sound policies.-VNA
