Indonesia to own largest EV battery plant in Southeast Asia

Jakarta (VNA) – Indonesian President Joko Widodo on September14 announced that a battery plant for electric vehicles (EV) in Karawang, WestJava, is expected to become the largest of its kind in Southeast Asia.

The factory is jointlyowned by two Korean firms, namely Hyundai and LG, and is operated throughtheir joint venture, Hyundai LG Industry (HLI) Green Power. With production scheduledto commence in early next year, the plant is expected to have a capacity of 30million battery cells, sufficient for the production of an estimated 180,000electric vehicles.

Speaking during a visitto the plant, Widodo emphasised that the establishment of the plantaligns with Indonesia’s ambitions to become the largest EV ecosystem inSoutheast Asia and a crucial player in the global EV supply chain.

He furtherhinted at the potential for other countries to rely on Indonesia for theirbattery cell supplies once the country is fully integrated into the globalsupply chain.

Minister of Investment Bahlil Lahadalia revealed that HLI Green Power has already initiated trial production atthe factory, which was constructed two years ago. He confirmed that actualproduction is slated to commence from March 2024 and that the factory, uponcompletion, will have an installed capacity of 30 GWh./.

At least 12 killed, hundreds injured in Philippines earthquake

The port city of General Santos suffered the heaviest damage, with disaster management officials confirming seven fatalities and about 130 injuries after several small buildings collapsed and multiple structures, including a key bridge, sustained severe cracks.
