Indonesia will import 50,000 ready-to-slaughter cattle from Australia in response to a sharp increase in the price of domestic beef, said Minister of Trade Rachmat Gobel.

The cost of beef at the local market has shot up by about 40 percent to 130,000 rupiah (10 USD) per kilogram.

According to a report of the Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture, the country’s beef stock is sufficient for the next four months.

Earlier, the government decided to suspend imports of Australian beef due to redundant supply in some areas.

Indonesia is the biggest market of the Australian food export industry, with a value of 1 billion USD a year.-VNA
