Indonesia warns of increasing terrorism financing.(Photo: AFP/VNA) Jakarta (VNA) – The National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) of Indonesia said that terrorism cases financed by sources related to the self-claimed Islamic States (IS) have been on the rise since 2014.
The agency said that terrorist cells need money to purchase weapons and explosive, induce new members, pay travelling costs for militants and develop terrorism network.
The BNPT and the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (PPATK) have worked to prevent the raising and transfer of money for terrorism activities, especially those with close links to the IS.
BNPT Chief Suhardi Alius said that the IS remains a major threat in Indonesia.
Meanwhile, Head of the PPATK Kiagus Ahmad Badaruddin said that his centre has kept a close watch on the capital flow from funds involved in terrorist networks with close connection to the IS, which may include terrorist groups that operate under the cover of Muslim missionaries.
Non-profit organisations may unintentionally join terrorism networks thus they must be cautious when receiving funding.-VNA
