Jakarta (VNA) – Millions of Indonesians on December 9 cast ballots in the country’s first-ever simultaneous elections for regional leaders in 264 regions, half of the local administrations.

About 800 pairs of regional head candidates compete in the elections to elect nine governors and vice governors, 222 district heads and their deputies, and 34 mayors and their deputies.

There are nearly 1.9 million first-time voters, accounting for 1.85 percent of the eligible voters, announced the commission.

Earlier on December 8, Indonesian Vice President Yusuf Kalla said that the regional elections are being witnessed by foreign observers from Malaysia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, the Philippines, and Australia, in addition to 25 ambassadors.

Security agencies in provinces and cities have coordinated with the army to implement measures to ensure security for the local election, according to National Police Chief Badrodin Haiti.-VNA
