Indonesia's floods, landslides claim at least 68 lives

At least 68 people were killed by floods and landslides in recent days in Indonesia's Sulawesi island, according to the Indonesian authority.

Hanoi (VNA) – At least 68 people were killed by floods andlandslides in recent days in Indonesia's Sulawesi island, according to theIndonesian authority.

The natural disasters injured dozens of people and forced nearly 7,000 local residentsto flee their homes to a safe place.

A total of 47 people sustained injury after floods and landslides caused by torrentialrains on the island, spokesman of the National Disaster Management Agency SutopoPurwo Nugroho said, adding the floods submerged more than 5,000 houses, and destroyedtens of bridges, school and worshiping places along with hundreds of hectaresof rice.

The rescue force is searching for seven missing people, Nugroho said.

According to the official, foods, medical services, sanitation facilities andothers are among the dire needs of the affected people, particularly those inevacuation centres.

Landslides and flooding are common in Indonesia, especially during the monsoonseason between October and April.
