Hanoi (VNA) – Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe agreed to cooperate in infrastructure development, counter-terrorism and safety initiatives to support the Philippines’ development during their talks in Tokyo on October 30.

It was their fourth meeting since Duterte took office in June 2016.

According to a joint statement released after the meeting, both leaders devised specific cooperation areas after Abe committed 8.8 billion USD to the Philippines for the next five years during his visit to the country in January.

Areas of infrastructure cooperation over the next five years will include the operation of a subway system in metropolitan Manila, increasing connectivity between regions through the construction of roads and bridges, and reinforcing rivers to manage the risk of flooding.

The leaders agreed that Japan will extend the utmost support for the rebuilding and revitalisation of Marawi and the surrounding areas, initially providing equipment for reconstruction before considering further help in line with a survey of the area's needs to be conducted by the Philippine government.

They also pledged to cooperate with each other for the success of the Philippines' hosting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and East Asia Summits scheduled for November.

Host and guest discussed legal enforcement to promote regional stability and security, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK)’s nuclear and missile programmes.-VNA
