Hanoi (VNA) – The Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang’s digital transformation process has yielded positive outcomes toward its aims of benefitting citizens and businesses through public services and social utilities, and of generating socio-economic development resources.

Provincial leaders have acknowledged that the shift to digital forms a new and complex field. It requires both guidance and organisational efforts to implement related strategies, mechanisms, and policies. It is also closely linked to administrative reforms. Simultaneously, work ought to be underway to develop a digital government with a focus on a digital economy, digital society, and digital citizens, ensuring alignment with the goals of the central government.

To this end, the provincial Party Committee's Standing Board issued Resolution No. 22-NQ/TU on June 8, 2022, regarding the local digital transformation until 2025 and the direction towards 2030. The provincial People's Committee, meanwhile, issued Plan No. 186/KH-UBND on December 24, 2020, outlining the digital shift for 2021 – 2025 as well as Decision No. 2174/QD-UBND on August 26, 2022, providing the strategy for the transformation during the 2022-2025 period with a vision to 2030.

Speaking at a local digital transformation conference, Vo Minh Trung, Director of the provincial Department of Information and Communications and Deputy Head of the provincial Digital Transformation Steering Committee, underscored positive digital transformation outcomes earned by the province so far.

According to the official, there has been significant progress in awareness and actions, with increased attention to and emphasis on guiding and managing relevant efforts. Investments have been made to strengthen digital infrastructure, while online public services and online payments have been effectively implemented, resulting in an increasing rate of document processing. Significant attention paid to information security and safety continues, and there is a focus on increasing financial and human resources serving the mission.

Putting people and businesses at the centre of the digital transformation is fundamental, Trung affirmed, noting that digital transformation should benefit citizens and enterprises through public services and social utilities, creating resources for the province’s socio-economic development.

Kien Giang is home to Phu Quoc, which is Vietnam’s largest island, first island city and famous tourist destination. The delta province is also the only Vietnamese locality home to two airports, including the Phu Quoc International Airport that receives 40-50 domestic and international flights each day.

Currently, Kien Giang has 20 industrial clusters and parks, while hosting 54 foreign-invested projects from 19 countries and territories with a total capital of over 2.76 billion USD. The locality is calling for investment in the five major areas of high technology agriculture development; renewable energy, clean energy; tourism; trade, services, education and training, high quality healthcare services; and marine economy, according to Vice Chairwoman of its People’s Committee Nguyen Thanh Nhan./.
