Vientiane (VNA) - The 12th high-level round-table meeting took place in Vientiane, Laos on November 27 to discuss Laos’ progress toward graduating from least developed country status by 2020.

A Vietnamese delegation led by Ambassador Nguyen Manh Hung attended the event, which attracted more than 300 Lao delegates and representatives from international organisations and diplomatic agencies.

In his opening speech, Lao Prime Minister Thongsing Thammavong said the Lao government has been carrying out the policy of building provinces into strategic units, developing districts into comprehensive strong units and villages into developed ones.

He pledged to effectively utilise official development assistance to achieve transparent, effective and sustainable development.

Participants looked into the achievements and lessons of the seventh national socio-economic development plan (2011-2015), Lao progress in meeting the United Nations Millennium Development Goals, the vision and direction of the eighth national socio-economic development plan to run from 2016-2020.

Following the closing ceremony, the Vientiane Declaration on Partnership for Effective Development Cooperation was signed.-VNA
