Vientiane (VNA) – Laos's Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare plans to issue visas to illegal foreignworkers and extend permits to legal ones so that they can continue to work inthe country.
The move will help Laos better manageillegal workers and solve the growing labour shortage in the country.
To realise the plan, the ministry has just applied a system toaccelerate the issuance of registration cards and work permit extensions forforeign workers in Laos. Thissystem is designed notonly to ensure uniformity, but also to simplifythe issuance of entry permits, registration cards, and re-issuance of workpermits to foreign workers.
The new system is designed toensure uniformity and streamline the issuing of worker entry permits, registration cards, andrenewed work permits for foreign workers.
In recent years, with the increasing numberof foreign workers migrating to Laos, especially illegal workers, the country'sauthorities at all levels have taken many measures to protect the rights of workers and ensure social order and safety.
In 2012, the Lao Government beganconducting labour registration for immigrants and in 2023, to manage illegal foreign workers, it opened centres at all departments of labourand social welfare in provinces and cities for foreigners to register and issuethem temporary work permits.
According to the ministry, the new licencing and foreign worker management system will help theLao Government collect information and determine the number of illegal migrantworkers to take appropriate solutions./.
