Hanoi (VNA) – Laos’s weather agency has issued a flood warning as the Mekong River and its main tributaries continued to rise after days of heavy rains.
The Lao Department of Meteorology and Hydrology reported that the Mekong River level in Luang Prabang reached 19.02m on September 12, surpassing the danger level of 18m. Flood warnings were also issued for Oudomxay, Xayaboury, and Pakxan districts. Local authorities have urged residents in low-lying areas to move belongings to safer locations, as northern Laos is faces severe flooding triggered by Typhoon Yagi.
Meanwhile, Thailand’s Office of the National Water Resources warned 36 provinces, including Bangkok capital, about the risk of flash floods. Military forces were deployed in Chiang Rai to assist thousands affected by flooding.
Since mid-August, 33 people have died due to severe weather, including nine fatalities linked to Typhoon Yagi this week. Rescue teams have evacuated hundreds in Chiang Rai, using boats and helicopters.
In Myanmar, heavy rains have caused severe flooding, particularly in central regions. At least 17 people have died in the town of Yamethin, Mandalay, due to monsoon rains and the impact of Typhoon Yagi. Authorities expect the rains to continue until September 13 before subsiding.
