Hanoi (VNA) - Heavy rains, triggered by Typhoon Yagi which wreaked havoc on the Philippines, China, and Vietnam last week, have caused flooding and landslides in many areas of northern Laos, leading to considerable property damage and leaving many residents stranded, especially in Luang Namtha province.
Videos and images shared on social media platforms in Laos show that in this province, homes have been submerged and belongings swept away by the floodwaters. Many residents have become trapped in their houses and are forced to take shelter on their rooftops to escape the rising water.
In Sayaboury and Oudomxay provinces, a large area of agricultural land has been affected, and residents forced to move to higher places for safety. Flooding and landslides have also impacted 11 villages in Namor district, Oudomxay, leading to power outages.
In response to the severe flooding, Laos is rapidly mobilising relief efforts to support the affected families. The Lao people are being urged to unite and assist by donating goods and essential supplies to help those in need.
The typhoon, said to be Asia’s strongest this year, has also caused severe flooding in Myanmar, affecting nearly 4,000 residents in Tachileik town in Shan state.
Heavy rains have impacted other states like Mandalay, Magway, Ayeyarwady, Chin, Kayin, and Rakhine./.
