World Peace Council (WPC) Executive Secretary Iraklis Tsavdaridis has commended Vietnam’s consistent policy on human rights protection and promotion.

Despite the various improvements in the promotion of gender quality and women empowerment, much still remains for Vietnam to do to ease gender prejudice and enhance public awareness on women’s role, according to experts.

Vietnam has been among the leading countries in Asia-Pacific in recording marked progress in gender quality and women’s empowerment over recent decades.

The Law on Gender Equality of Vietnam was built in conformity with international standards on human rights, including binding international treaties that the country has participated in and inter-Governmental agreements, heard a recent conference.

Vietnam has recorded gender equality achievements in political and economic sectors since the Law on Gender Equality took effect.

Vietnam has created 1.5-1.6 million new jobs each year since 2011, 48 percent of which are generated for women.

It is necessary to further promote public awareness of women’s empowerment, especially their political participation, although the percentage of women in Vietnam’s parliament is currently higher than the global average, said a minister.

Gender responsive budgeting was the main topic of a workshop held by the National Assembly’s Committee for Social Affairs and the UN Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women in Hanoi on September 17.

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) will help Vietnam fight gender-based and domestic violence under a project recently approved by Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc.
