"Les Misérables” staged in Hai Phong city for the first time

The famed musical “Les Misérables” based on the masterpiece by Victor Hugo was staged at Hai Phong City Opera House in the northern port city of Hai Phong on November 19.

Hai Phong (VNA) – The famed musical “Les Misérables” based on the masterpiece by Victor Hugo was staged at Hai Phong City Opera House in the northern port city of Hai Phong on November 19.

This is the first time a musical has been performed in the city.

According to Tran Thi Hoang Mai, director of the municipal Department of Culture and Sports, the department has instructed relevant units to bring the renown musical to the audience in the locality to meet the growing demand for art among the city dwellers.

Dinh Thi Bich Lien from Hai Phong City Arts Centre said the musical was staged in English with Vietnamese subtitles. The play brought together more than 150 artists from the Vietnam National Opera and Ballet, the Hanoi Voices Choir, and several Hai Phong-based art troupes.

The performance was warmly welcomed by the audience, both Vietnamese and foreigners, she said.

Oliver Cachet, a French tourist, said that it was exciting to enjoy a famous musical right at Hai Phong Opera House.

Nguyen Thao Nguyen, who resides in Hai Phong city’s Ngo Quyen district, shared the same feeling of excitement for the work, adding that next time she will take her children so that they can have a deeper appreciation for art.

The musical ‘Les Misérables’ premiered in 1980, and has since been performed in over 42 countries and 21 languages, including in Vietnam./.
