Tran Gia, a producer of Chung cake (Vietnamese square glutinous rice cake) based in Bien Hoa city, the southern province of Dong Nai, will export 35 tonnes of the cake to the US, Canada, Europe and several Asian countries.
Tran Thanh Toan, the owner of Tran Gia, revealed that his establishment will also ship abroad 5 tonnes of “Dong” (phrynium) leaves (used to wrap the cake) to help overseas Vietnamese people enjoy tastes from the homeland during the Tet (Lunar New Year) holiday.
According to him, Tran Gia exports around 35-45 tonnes of Chung cake to these markets each year. Its cake is favoured by overseas Vietnamese thanks to nice appearance and good quality.
Since 2005, Tran Gia has sought the markets for Chung cake and coordinated with some partners to deliver it to foreign countries.
Chung cake is a traditional Vietnamese dish that is an integral part of the Lunar New Year celebration. It is made from glutinous rice, pork meat and green bean paste, and wrapped in a square of “Dong” leaves, giving the rice a green colour after being boiled for ten hours.
Every Vietnamese family must have Chung cake among their offerings to be placed on the ancestors’ altars during Tet.-VNA
