Kuala Lumpur (VNA) – Malaysia’s Immigration Department has deported 23,000 illegal immigrants this year to May for criminal offence, said its director-general Mustafar Ali.
Indonesia topped the list of deported illegal immigrants with 6,849 people, followed by Bangladesh with 4,220 people.
The director-general listed various offences committed by illegal immigrants such as prostitution, black money scam, murder, robbery and kidnapping.
He stressed that Malaysia needs foreign workers but it will not tolerate their crimes.
The Southeast Asian country currently has 13 detention centres and the Immigration Department detained a total of 146,876 illegal immigrants in different crackdowns conducted between 2014 and 2016. –VNA
