Kuala Lumpur (VNA) – Nearly 1,500 illegal immigrants have been detained in a nationwide operation by the Immigration Department of Malaysia.
Director-general of the department Khairul Dzaimee Daud said the illegal immigrants were arrested on March 1 evening after forces investigated 3,750 foreigners.
They were detained for different violations such as overstaying their visas and entering the country without valid documents.
The official said since the beginning of this year, the department has detained 9,452 illegal immigrants, mainly from Indonesia, Bangladesh, Myanmar and the Philippines.
It also detained 176 employers during the period for illegal use of foreign workers and brought 151 of them to court.
A total of 72,361 individuals were denied entry into Malaysia in 2018 due to passport and visa problems.-VNA
