Kuala Lumpur (VNA) -Malaysia police said on June 9 that they have arrested more than 10 people following an ongoing investigation on some staffers of the Immigration Department colluding with criminals to distort arrival and departure information.

According to Immigration Director General Datuk Sakib Kusmi, the crime began in 2010, mostly taking place at Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

Five of the people arrested were working for the Immigration Department, he added.

The agency said it fired 15 people, suspended 14 others over their involvement in the security loophole, which affected the system managing the number of people entering and leaving the country.

Sixty-three officers have been transferred to other positions, and about 20 people might face fines or be put under surveillance, it said.

Malaysia recorded a number of citizens joining the self-claimed Islamic State in Syrian and Iraq. Local authorities are on full alert for the return of these people and possible attacks.-VNA
