The law , which carries punishments of up to six years in prison and amaximum fine of 500,000 RM (130,000 USD), was voted through in the Parliament'sLower House with 123 votes for and 64 votes against.
Proposed by the Malaysian government, the legislation aims to deal with thespread of fake news, and protect the public from such news, while ensuring freedomof expression.
The law also stipulates that anyone who violates this law outside Malaysia for Malaysia-relatedinformation that the Malaysian government considers fraudulent will also bepunished in Malaysia.
It contains provisions that allow courts to order the closure ofany publication media, especially social network forums, if they are associatedto fake news.-VNA
